THE BRIGHT SIDE
The two weather seasons available to Wisconsin drivers now are winter and road construction.
Yes, with the exception of stopping a couple of days last weekend, to let some really strange snowstorms pass and the snowmelt, the road construction crews are hard at it again this year. The stretch of Highway 12, running from Lake Geneva to Elkhorn and back is being totally torn up, and it’s about time. That highway has been a cracked and fractured mess for years. The other stretch of road is, once again, Kenosha to the eastern edge of Lake Geneva. Even the traffic signal at Edwards and Main Street (think Walgreens) is involved, at least as far as being part of the blocking to narrow traffic down to one lane when heading east into the mass of construction.
South Street Trail.
The City of Lake Geneva and the Board of Park Commissioners applied for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant funded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to improve the South Street Trail on the south side of Lake Geneva covering about 1.54 miles. Improvements needed include completing gaps in the existing trail between Lake Shore Drive and the existing trail at Badger High School. The new trail is expected to be on the north side of South Street, west of Dorwood Drive and South Street. Intersection improvements are needed at South Wells Street/County Highway H and South Street with that area is busy and not at all safe. Work is being proposed to develop a new off-street trail on County H between Badger High School and the middle school, and then, south of the school, install bicycle lanes to connect to the future YMCA which will consist of a ten-foot-wide asphalt trail for walking, bicycling, skating and other non-motorized activities.
The trail will be plowed to allow for year-round use, primarily by the students. The city was awarded $835,316.00 to fund the project and get it underway. A thirty percent design meeting between the Strand Associates, WisDOT, and the city was held in mid-March and discussed critical issues concerning the design. Issues of concern; retaining wall locations, tree removals, and potential crosswalk improvements revisions for the Lake Geneva Youth Camp and the Wells and South Streets intersection. There will be a public information meeting related to the project on Wednesday, April 6th, at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall for public comments and discussion. Any comments, questions or concerns will be brought forward for the city to review and discuss before any design changes are made.
The Place Of The Week

The Lake Geneva Public Library is now open! The renovations are fantastic, along with the newly revealed views of the lake.
