THE BRIGHT SIDE
‘Utah’ Blaine, an open public letter by the GSR to the City of Oak Harbor, Washington.
This letter is written during. a troubling time for the city administrator who is, and will likely remain, the best city administrator the City of Lake Geneva has ever had. This man stepped into a veritable ‘shitstorm’ of local confusion, financial games, building developer conspiracies and local political mismanagement like the city had never seen. Within months there was peace across the land. The public utility nightmare of private under-the-table deals, unfair early opening of bids, awarding jobs and contracts to friends, and so much more, all went away.
There was dissension about the ‘cures’ Blaine was able to effect, and a lot of personal invective about what he’d done and was continuing to do. You have Blaine now, and the entire staff of this local paper would love to have him back. The current city administrator engages in absolutely nothing controversial at all.
“Utah Blaine,” as we nicknamed this splendid man and city administrator, is dearly missed here. The best we can do from thousands of miles away is try to help your community by letting you know that we found this man to have the kind of work ethic, integrity, and respect for employees and citizens that is so rare in today’s polarized political world of leadership. Blaine’s in trouble, we have heard, and we want to stand for him if that’s at all possible. We have no skin in this game and no reason to write great things about him, other than that we found him to be terrific for your Geneva Lake communities. The Geneva Shore Report is not known for heady compliments, but this man was, and likely remains, exceptional and outstanding. Go with him…

Thank you for providing insight to Mr. Oborn’s past achievements. It’s tough for an outsider here in Island County, WA to effect positive change in an environment ruled by entitlement and petty partisan alliances. .
Thank you for the compliment, Richard
