THE BRIGHT SIDE

The holiday season is full of celebration and fun but the safety of everyone weighs heavily on the police and service departments everywhere.
The holiday campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” began before Christmas and continues through New Year’s Day. The Lake Geneva Police department participates in the campaign every year and is again this year. Last year Wisconsin had one hundred and sixty-nine deaths and more than three thousand injuries due to alcohol-related accidents.

Alcohol-related accidents continue to be a concern, the number of drug-related accidents continues to cause safety issues on roadways. The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is compromised after drinking certain levels of alcohol and after taking drugs, including illegal and legal prescriptions, as well as some over-the-counter concoctions. The goal of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is to help make the roadways safer for everyone and the hope is that it will avoid tragedies, thereby allowing the holidays to be safe and happy for all. Be prepared when heading out to celebrate, because all police officers are on high alert for impaired driving and are making every effort to discover, detect and remove impaired drivers from the roadways.

If you plan to celebrate by modifying yourself using alcohol or drugs then identify a sober driver to drive for you, and never allow someone who is altered to get behind the wheel, including yourself. There is a free mobile app; “Drive Sober” available for downloads at the WisDOT website. It can help locate mass transit and taxi services. Some drinking establishments are also helping in the effort and have programs to provide patrons safe rides home. Check it out at; www.tlw.org/. The cooperation of all on the roadways is needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
