THE BRIGHT SIDE
The bubblers are finally on.
The Riviera aeration system is up and functional, and that fact can readily be witnessed by standing down by the building and noting the lack of ice surrounding all the pilings of the piers. Nice work City of Lake Geneva, finally. The bathrooms in that building are all still locked up on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the biggest Lake Geneva visitation days, the people still coming in droves up from Illinois. The ice is thickening, as winter really sets in so care is necessary when going out on its surface. Lake Geneva has the bubblers around the pier complex, which are usually surrounded by pylons and rope to warn people about getting too close to the open water or the very thin ice near the bubblers. So far this year, no pylons have been erected. Every year Lake Geneva loses an average of two fishermen.
The lake is treacherous because it is spring-fed and it’s impossible to calculate where the ice will be thicker or thinner at any specific spot out from the shore. Lake Geneva is also deep, so any distance beyond about thirty feet out from the edge of the shore is likely to be water deep enough to drown or freeze to death. Just because people four or five hundred yards away out on the ice, appear safe, don’t necessarily be fooled. Full-size vehicles should never be out on Lake Geneva ice, but they go out there anyway. The thickness is only three to six inches in depth right now, as this issue comes out. That’s just barely enough for humans to walk on with any safety (which does not mean it’s safe for a shanty, barbecue, equipment, and many people gathered in one small spot!). Bearing witness to the differential dangers indicated here in this article, please note that there are still huge open areas where there’s no ice formed at all.
