The strangeness of the athletes, all crowded into boats and floating down the Seine through downtown Paris turned out to be bizarre, as the ‘living art’ along the way tortured spectators worldwide with weird trans replacements for a faux Last Supper, and bad dancers strung all along the shore on both sides of the river. Only the games themselves, which began the next day, brought the huge sports undertaking back into some form of acceptable social competition and entertainment.
In the Paris Olympics of 2024, the women’s gymnastics team qualifications took place. The U.S., led by Simone Biles, qualified first as a team and has finalists in all-around and individual events. USA men’s basketball began its gold medal defense with a win, defeating Serbia 110-84 in its group play opener. Team USA’s Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh took gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s 100-meter butterfly. Nic Fink, the sole American in the field for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, tied for silver with Great Britain’s Adam Peaty. Americans Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs took gold and silver in fencing, while Haley Batten won silver in women’s mountain biking.
The U.S. women’s soccer team defeated Germany 4-1. Team USA’s Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng, the No. 3-seeded team, scored an easy 2-0 win (21-16, 21-11) over the Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova in a Group C women’s match in beach volleyball.
