THE BRIGHT SIDE
Celebrate the one-hundred-year anniversary of the fabulous Mars Restaurant.
Thursday, June 22, 2023, at four-thirty p.m., going on until eleven p.m., there’s going to be a wild and raucous party at the Riviera complex in downtown Lake Geneva. By the way, Mars is not named after the red planet. It’s named after one of the previous dozen former owners. This event is going to be a full scale ‘gala’ affair, with dinner, a band and much more. Tickets are a hundred and twenty-five bucks each, and there are still some available. That’s expensive but there’s value in attending not to be overlooked. The current owners of the Mars Resort can be found at W4098 South Shore Drive on Lake Como (you head west on Highway 50 and take the first turn toward Lake Como after passing Pesches Nursery).
Recently, Mars’ owners bought the French Country Inn restaurant located not a quarter mile from the original Mars. It’s called the Getaway and it’s just as fabulous as Mars. The prime rib there is becoming legendary, even at this early date, because of its huge size and low price. You can celebrate that place too at the big party.
The City of Lake Geneva Fire Department has been busier than normal with the increase in calls related to open burning.
With the county being well below normal precipitation amounts, the ground, plants, trees, and everything else is extremely dry. In May there’s a 43% chance of rain on an average day. On the average day it rains or snows, the area gets about 0.46 inches of precipitation. The normal precipitation total for May is just 4.12 inches, while the area only received a mere 1.62 inches this year. This dry trend continued into June, making conditions worse. This is important to remember before you decide to burn grass, leaves, or anything else. Outside fires can quickly get out of control and spread much faster than they normally might. The fire department is reminding residents to never leave a fire unattended; have a hose or water bucket present; never use accelerants to start a fire; and maintain a safe distance from combustible materials and structures.
Please be careful if you decide to burn or have a fire and take all necessary precautions. The best solution of all is to wait until the drought has passed on by before burning anything outside. If a fire you started does begin to get out of control have your cell phone handy and call the local fire department. The departments around Geneva Lake do not normally cite those who start and lose control of brush fires so make the call quickly if you suspect you can’t handle the situation.
