THE BRIGHT SIDE

Lake Geneva’s first responders came through with such hard work during and after the recent storms.
During those days and nights, the City of Lake Geneva Fire Department responded to almost countless requests for service. Most requests were related to the ice storm, which included calls alerting firefighters to the fact that there were high voltage wires being down. The responders also handled fire alarms, medical emergencies, and citizen welfare checks. With the influx of calls the normal staffing of four was increased to sixteen during the peak call hours. This allowed for the two ambulances, the two engine companies, and the three command vehicles to be fully staffed to handle multiple overlapping calls.  EMS personnel transported two hospice patients to the hospital when their homes lost electrical power.  Residents who were dependent on oxygen machines were also given oxygen tanks for emergency use until power was restored.

Off duty responders left their families and primary jobs to handle these extra calls, showing just how dedicated and outstanding our first responders are. These men and women did not miss a single call for service during those 48 , which is extraordinary. They pushed through with very little sleep or time to recharge before the next call would come in.  EMS personnel transported two hospice patients to the hospital when their homes lost electrical power.  Residents dependent on oxygen machines were also given oxygen tanks for emergency use until power was restored. Chief John Peters commented, “This was an unusual 48 hours with such a high number of emergencies, however, we were prepared.” These responders all went above and beyond the normal call of duty and Lake Geneva (and surrounding communities) have so much to be grateful for.
