THE BRIGHT SIDE
ABC and the Geneva Lake Conservancy are working together to address the decline of young oak trees in Walworth County, despite the presence of mature oaks.
The Geneva Lake Conservancy is a local organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the lands and waterways of Walworth County and beyond. They are involved in various conservation efforts, including working with landowners to preserve their property and promoting environmental awareness. ABC, or the American Bird Conservancy, is an organization dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats. While Walworth County has many large, mature oak trees, there’s a lack of young oaks in the understory, which is a concern for the health and sustainability of the oak-dominated ecosystems.
Oak trees are considered keystone species, meaning they are crucial for the health and stability of the ecosystems they inhabit, supporting a wide variety of wildlife, including many bird species. ABC has developed a management plan to eradicate invasive plants that are competing with young oak trees, creating a more favorable environment for oak regeneration. Before European settlers cleared and farmed the land here, oaks defined Walworth County’s landscape. ABC developed a management plan to eradicate the invasive plants that threaten oak trees. Buckthorn, honeysuckle, and invasive species are removed by volunteers to help the oaks grow. From lakefront property to wetlands, forests and farms, the land in Walworth County has exceptional value for its scenic beauty, its wildlife habitat, and its importance to the health of our lakes and streams.
The Geneva Lake Conservancy has 40 years of experience in helping landowners to preserve their property. Working with the Geneva Lake Conservancy, they can help you select the right land protection tool to protect your property.
