Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14th.
Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of a family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. This holiday includes appreciating mothers, aunts, grandmothers, friends, cousins, or any woman that has had a maternal impact on your life. This modern holiday was first celebrated in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held the first Mother’s Day service of worship at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother’s sacrifices and dedication to her family, friends, and country. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor this and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

By 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother’s Day as a local holiday. To help celebrate mother and special women in our lives many local businesses will put on special brunch events or other special celebrations. Grand Geneva, Geneva National, The Ridge, The Getaway and Baker House will offer special brunch events.

Lake Geneva Cruise Line is offering a 20% discount on gift certificates, along with a luncheon cruise on Mother’s Day. Other gift ideas include manicures, pedicures, massages, help with taking over the chores, or simply making the meals and cleaning up so that a motherly woman can truly have a day off. No matter who or how you celebrate, have a Happy Mother’s Day.
