THE BRIGHT SIDE

Wisconsin is rebranding all thirteen of its universities.
The University of Wisconsin System will rebrand itself over the coming months to “Universities of Wisconsin” as it looks to strengthen the “UW” reputation across all 13 schools, not just UW-Madison. The system will transition to the new name over the next few months with a new logo, new letterhead, and new websites. In addition to dropping “System” from its preferred name, it will ditch the maroon “University of Wisconsin System” logo for one that simply shows “UW” inside the outline of the state with teal accents. A secondary logo draws the universities’ locations out like a constellation.

The rebranding also comes with a new motto: “Future Ready, For All.” The change will be finalized in early 2024. Overall enrollment dipped for eight straight years in the UW System, before growing slightly overall this year. Enrollment still dropped at eight campuses in 2023, though. Last week the system announced that 10 campuses are launching a direct admissions program. Campuses will review the grades of high school students who opt into the program and send acceptance letters to qualified students, eliminating the need to apply. The rebranding is the first big name change for UW since the 1971 merger that brought together the University of Wisconsin, which consisted of UW-Madison and its Extension campuses in Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Kenosha, and the former State

Universities System, which consisted of nine campuses and was founded in 1866. The universities’ collective legal name will, however, remain the University of Wisconsin System.
