THE BRIGHT SIDE
A Wisconsin lawmaker wants this to be the last school year that begins with cell phones in the classroom.
State Senator. Dan Knodl, says, “Wisconsin schools need to see a cell phone ban.” As it currently sits each school district has its own set of rules for cellphone usage in schools and classrooms. Some school districts have district-wide policies, while others allow principals in individual schools to set their own rules. Some local districts mandate that kids leave their phones in their lockers until the end of the day. Then others allow the students to have their phones throughout the day with no real rules at all. Cell phones are one of the biggest distractions for kids. They cause fights, cheating, addiction, cyberbullying, and lack of human connection. Knodl said it is clear that cell phones in school pose huge problems.
Teachers are constantly battling with kids about their cellphones which also takes away from class time and learning. “Teachers are constantly battling with students over cellphone use and enforcement and punishment policies vary wildly leading to confusion from school to school and district to district,” Knodl added. “I plan to propose a new state law to alleviate this burden on our teachers and to take away this distraction from our students. I believe this will be a positive policy reform in our schools.”
It will be interesting to watch this story progress and see if the state chooses to do what is best for the students and teachers. This is one of those very rare non-partisan efforts to affect education quality in all Wisconsin schools and the Geneva Shore Report is firmly behind Knodl and this effort.
