Our Place
The interminable snow continues to fall, not in record amounts, but in continuous, seemingly never-ending three-inch dribbles every week.
The snow fell again on Sunday night, only dumping between two and four inches in and around Geneva Lake. The roads were able to handle the hit mostly because the temperature has gone up to near, or just above, freezing and the villages, city, and towns around the lake have gotten used to really going at it and clearing things with surprising rapidity. Tom Earle’s crew in Lake Geneva has been about as dependable as that of a crazy uncle. He shows up to do the job without fail but performance is a bit wobbly here and there. The snow was plowed, shoveled, and scraped on Sunday night and on into Monday morning, but the results are the ‘uncle’ kind of results, with piles everywhere and runnels of snow formed in triangular rows up and down streets. Fortunately, aside from weekends and Winterfest times, the drivers native to this part of Wisconsin are experienced and equipped to deal with such haphazardly ministered to conditions.
The splendid Avant Coffee and Bicycle Shop is sending CEO Ann Esarco to run for city council in Lake Geneva.
The only thing holding Avant back at all is a simple fact that bicycle sales have been so terrific this year that the place cannot get enough to sell, almost no matter what they charge. Admittedly, as with their coffee which is roasted on-site every day, the quality of Avant’s bikes has become locally legendary, not to mention their having the best repair and maintenance shop within fifty miles. Ann is the creator and architect of all that, and she wants to bring her kind of business and public relations talent to helping run local city government. How can we, or anybody else, not endorse her to do just that? You go Ann Esarco!
The Oh My Gauze store in downtown Lake Geneva is closing after 32 years of business.
Located at 225 Broad St. they are in the process of closing so that the owners can focus on their Florida locations. With the lease for the Lake Geneva location coming up, it seemed a good time for the owner to transition focus on the other locations. The store carries women’s clothing and jewelry, some of which are on sale at 50% off. The manager is assuring everyone that it is not a going out of the business sale but simply a store closing. There is no exact closing date as of yet, but the manager anticipates closing the doors in mid-March. The Lake Geneva Location, which is the original location and grew from there, currently has five employees some of whom have taken time off because of the pandemic, were planning on coming back to work, so the closing is a sad thing for them. Customers will be able to still purchase their favorite items at www.ohmygauze.com along with several items that will be carried at Tre’s Belle Boutique. Oh My Gauze is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until it closes its doors.
