THE BRIGHT SIDE

Hillmoor lays there, a big fat chunk of land on the city’s eastern flank…waiting.
Nothing was said after the city’s last closed session (the ‘Cone of Silence, purchased from the television set of Get Smart, was lowered once again).  Nothing has been said since.  Only the largest single lawsuit in the city’s history.  What is happening over there on that giant chunk of developable property?  Why is there only silence?  Mirabel Hummel, that even bigger chunk of property, was purchased by “Angel” J.B. Pritzker, but where’s Hillmoor’s angel?

The current mayor, the most excellent Charlene Klein, was the head of the ‘Friends of Hillmoor’ collection of some odd citizens.  She is not saying anything about Hillmoor either.  The partial angel to Hillmoor is Tina Trahan, who contributed a big check so that the Hillmoor crew could hire attorneys has also been quiet and out of town for almost a year.  She did allow the String of Pearls VIPs to use the manor for their pre-party before the string of beads celebration, but that’s it.  The X-Files investigators drive by and check on that property from time to time, as well as the now fenced-off and well-labeled private property that Hillmoor has become.  A kingdom of weeds, blown debris, and falling trees.

Fall is almost here and fall festivals are popping up everywhere.
The 21st Annual Scarecrow Fest will be put on this Saturday, the 18th, from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m., in downtown Delavan. The Main Street brick road will be filled with sidewalk sales, craft, fair vendors, kids’ activities, including the scarecrow building, and so much more. The fun doesn’t end there, as the evening continues at the Phoenix bandshell for live entertainment, ending the night with a spectacular light show by Laser Fusion. This is an event you don’t want to miss. It is expected to be one of the best shows ever and is guaranteed to entertain all ages.  The laser show is free, by the way!

It’s time to experience the fall equinox once again.
There’s no better way to celebrate than with a night among the stars. This Friday, September 17th, join GLAS Education in Library Park starting at 8:00 p.m., to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox. The equinox, which always falls in September (this year on September 22nd), celebrates the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the astronomical start of the fall season.  The two (sometimes referred to as the vernal equinoxes), one in the spring and the other in the fall, are defined as: “the autumnal equinox, two moments in the year when the sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length; also, either of the two points in the sky where the ecliptic (the sun’s annual pathway) and the celestial equator intersect.” In honor of this event, spectators will be able to gaze at Jupiter and Saturn as well as other celestial objects while looking through a telescope. Then, following the ‘lab’ portion of the event, they can learn all about the Autumnal Equinox itself. There will also be an assortment of other astronomy and nighttime activities during this fun-filled night under the stars.
