LITTLE GEMS

The Egg Harbor restaurant on Main Street got turned down for a liquor license.
Only Howell and Fesenmaier had the good sense, and kindness, to vote for them to get the last of the reserve licenses the city holds.  Egg Harbor has been a fixture of downtown Lake Geneva for many years and is wonderfully operated, inexpensive, and with great food.  Neat people too.  It would not have been one of those Thumbs Up or Hogs and Kisses places where most of Lake Geneva’s early a.m. troubles come from.  Hedland even said, when quizzed by Fesenmaier about the fact that when there were five reserve licenses available that four of them went to existing businesses (reserve liquor licenses are supposed to be held in order to attract and reward new businesses coming to town).  Hedland, in a moment of truth, said that in the old days of the ‘good old boys’ the licenses were given to anybody who was a friend.  Glad those days are gone.

Changes are coming for Thumbs Up on Broad Street.
There have been many complaints and speculation about illegal activities going on at the bar before and after hours. The Lake Geneva police department has gotten various complaints about such activities and fights taking place at Thumbs Up, and each one has been taken seriously. The police department must go through the proper process to address all the problems in order to take more drastic measures, such as taking away a liquor license. Last Thursday Thumbs Up was served with papers for violating the nuisance ordinance on a regular basis. Memorial Day weekend got exceptionally out of control and the Walworth County Sheriffs were called in for backup. There was fight after fight and things got way out of hand. Thumbs Up was cited for serving minors and staying open later than the time allowed, all of which has been going on for quite a while. This week the owners of the bar, the chief of police, and the city attorney of Lake Geneva will be meeting to discuss the situation and inform the owners of what is going to be expected of them in the future from and at their establishment.  If the ‘nuisance’ issues continue after that then the next step is going to end up in a trial and the potential taking away the Thumbs Up liquor license.
