LITTLE GEMS

The dangers posed by the road situation on Wells Street running in front of McDonald’s, Burger King, Joanie’s Diner, the YMCA, and Culvers.
Take your life, or at least your car’s life, in your hands, and then pray. Try to look both ways.  Hell, you have to look five or six ways and even then, when you finally work up the courage to nose out into traffic there is this nagging worry buried deep down in your psychology.  This street is dangerous.  The cars coming and going from all directions are not in a safe situation, as the road not only has so many busy entrances and exits it also has substantial curves and runs up and down a big hill.  What a recipe for looming disaster.  Fixing this mess is more important than even the new signal on the bypass or the signal at Walgreens coming into town.

Update on 252 Center Street.
The building has been purchased by the Georges, and the plan is to raze the current structure. The plan commission recommended approval last week, and the city council approved it this week. The discussion didn’t take long and all city officials voted in favor remarking that if the Georges are directing the work, which has always been quality, there are no concerns. The Georges have one tenant left in the current building and that business will be closing after Memorial Day and moving out. The razing will begin about a week later and, if all goes well, the police and fire department will be utilizing the space for a training session which may even be a part of the demolition. The razing will take about a week, and then Tomas and Kathy will be turning the cleared land into a green space for all to enjoy this summer. The Georges are considerate to fellow business owners in Lake Geneva and do not want to hinder any foot traffic and potential sales during the summer season. When Lake Geneva slows down in the fall the building process will begin. The building’s main floor will be used for the current Brick and Mortar, with one or two small retail spaces in the front for potential new entrepreneurs. The second floor will be two apartments or vacation rentals. Whatever the final decision is on the new building it will not be done without community and council approval.

Edwards Boulevard construction is complete.
The stretch of roadway between Sheridan Springs Road and Highway 50 has been completely repaved; curbs, bike paths, and sidewalks have been added or repaired, and of course, the controversial loss of a lane may help with the addition of much-needed turn lanes. The section of Edwards that has been repaved is the same one that leads to most of the big box stores like Target and Home Depot. The road is much smoother and quieter to drive than it was before.
