OUR PLACE

Demolition downtown Lake Geneva at 252 Center Street began early Monday morning and was completely done and cleaned up before the end of the day Tuesday.
The building was originally the location of the Derrick Funeral home, and since that time years ago has had numerous other uses and owners. The building has been an icon in the downtown area since 1912, and the Derrick family continues to be very well-known good people, and serve the community from the new funeral home on Edwards Boulevard. Thomas and Kathy George (Brick and Mortar) are the newest owners of the building and have big plans for the location when they rebuild. The city council has approved the demolition and general development plan, which includes an open green space for all to enjoy, and then a beautiful new building to be erected in the fall. The sheriff, police, and fire departments took full advantage of the empty building and utilized it for skills training throughout most of the summer.

Now that the demo is done the green space will be smoothed over and construction plans can begin in the fall. The hope of the new owners is to have approved plans and a crew ready to start work late fall and on through the winter. Winter construction would be the most convenient for the city as it is a slower time as far as traffic and visitors are concerned, however even the winter months in Lake Geneva have become busier than past winters. The construction should not be a huge problem during the winter, however, and it is likely to be much more convenient for everyone. If the land is prepped and footings are in before the freeze, the rest of the construction can be done. The demolition had several spectators who had mixed emotions during the event, all seemed sad to see the old classical building go but they were also excited for what the future might bring.
