What is to be done when regulations are not applied through the agencies created to apply them?
The tearing apart of Driehaus Park for the installation of much larger gasoline tanks by Gage Marine goes on unabated and unchecked by any regulatory agency. The city claims it is regulated by a permit generated through Public Utility. Public Utility claims it is under the control of Public Works, while Public Works states that it is under the control and purview of the Wisconsin State DNR. DNR indicates that it is only responsible for checking and holding people responsible for the purity and quality of the earth they are digging in.
There you have it. What is fast becoming an eyesore, not twenty feet from the edge of the lake in the very center and middle of Lake Geneva, continues to be built with no apparent supervision other than that of trucks with their names painted over or taped off, and people working on the project who refuse to talk with anyone at all. What gives? What kind of huge hump is that part of the park going to become, and what are the dangers that must be endured of having multi-thousand gallon tanks of gasoline, constantly being drawn from and refilled at the lakes edge in the heavily populated downtown park? This started out as a project to replace some old tanks that were leaking, but now it’s becoming a stealth Mobil or BP station.
How clever was that to pull off?
