Dungeons and Dragons.
This game has a special meaning to many people in Lake Geneva, maybe because it was created right in the middle of this city in Gary Gygax’s basement. Unfortunately, Gary passed away in 2008, but his legacy lives on in his popular game which is enjoyed by thousands. D and D is a role-playing game where you take on the alias of a character of your choosing. In the game, you and a group of friends go on a quest where you can slay various monsters, explore the lands, and interact with several different races of people.
There are two main roles one can take on: The Dungeon Master and the player. The Dungeon Master creates the quest and the storyline and the player explores and interacts with the Dungeon Master’s carefully crafted world and characters. In memory of Gary and Dungeons and Dragons, the Horticultural Hall, the Matheson Memorial Library, Geneva Lakes Museum, and GaryCon are all hosting D and D related events. Horticultural Hall will be offering an intro to Dungeon and Dragons on Saturday, February 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you want to learn the history about D & D or try playing yourself, then this event is for you. The Matheson Memorial Library in Elkhorn will be offering an intro to Dungeon and Dragons character creation on Wednesday, February 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is an opportunity to create your own character and meet others that enjoy the game, as well. The Geneva Lakes Museum is preparing a special exhibit featuring items from Gary and Dungeons and Dragons. They are hoping to collect enough items and get the exhibit ready to open by the end of the month.
The biggest event celebrating Gary and D & D is GaryCon, which is held every year in Lake Geneva. This year it will be held at the Ridge (located minutes from downtown, heading west on the Northside of Highway 50) from March 26th to March 29th. At this annual convention, everyone will celebrate the life and works of Gary Gygax. They do this by doing what he loved in life, and that was playing games. If you’re curious about Dungeons and Dragons one of these events is sure to be found interesting and a lot of fun.
The Grapevine Theatre at the Bottle Shop.
This great place will have a standup comedy show this Saturday, February 22, starting at 6 p.m. and will go to 8 p.m. The show presents a lineup of five comedians and a great MC. Tickets are $20 and include one drink from the Grapevine Theatre drink menu. You can arrive early and enjoy some drinks and appetizers at the bottle shop while you wait.
Lakeland Animal Shelter Fundraiser.
Stop by Sprecher’s Thursday, February 20th, for an all-day fundraiser benefiting Lakeland Animal Shelter. Enjoy lunch or dinner and a portion of the proceeds, which will benefit the homeless animals and supplies for the shelter. There will also be many items to bid on and possibly an appearance by one of our furry friends from the shelter. It is a great cause. Please help those animals that don’t have a forever home, maybe even provide that loving home to a lucky pet.
