OUR PLACE
This weekend is the Fourth of July and Lake Geneva is expecting a busier holiday weekend than in the past.
The police and fire departments are trying to prepare for the crowds and chaos without having the extra backup that is usually provided. Every year Big Foot State Park has to be closed because capacity has been reached and crowds become overwhelming. Typically, the Lake Geneva Police Department would receive volunteer back-up so they would not have to place officers at the park, but all their volunteers have retired, and receiving any new help is not likely at this time, particularly since police and fire personnel have to go through extensive training and testing even to work part-time.
Placing officers at a single park takes away from the limited staff left to service the rest of the city and downtown area. There is also a concern because the downtown has been crazier and more chaotic than in previous years, with fights, underage drinking, and large crowds taking place at a volume unheard of since the nineteen sixties. On weekends the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department has had to take over the calls for Lake Geneva because the local city officers have not been able to keep up with the influx of calls and demands. The Lake Geneva Police Department is concerned about staffing during the Fourth of July weekend especially if it cannot get assistance from the rest of the county.
The Pier down by the pier in Town of Linn.
This problematic place, set halfway down a road to nowhere that nearly perfectly divides the southern portion of the township, has created almost as much controversy as the lunacy former town board member Chris Jones brought to the township’s attention a few months back. That lunacy cost Jones her position in the township, by an overwhelming number of votes. This controversy, seemingly like a proverbial storm in a glass of water compared to the decertification attempt by the Jones people, still has far-reaching effects and is causing a whole lot of people to act in rather outlandish ways. The ‘Birchers,’ (the people who own homes in the small development down by the water right near the real boat pier) have gotten together to decry, oppose and do anything they can to stop Mr. Patrick Hogan from developing his small business into a club for the outdoor sports venues he hopes to be allowed to construct.
