Getting to and from school safely is a shared responsibility for drivers, parents, and students as the new school year begins.
Drivers in all directions must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop-arm. Obey posted speed limits and watch for flashing beacons and crossing guards. Put phones away and stay alert in residential neighborhoods and near bus stops. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before you can start driving again. Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone, or bus stop.

We also cannot necessarily depend upon the school districts for total security.  It’s been only weeks since discovering that the districts in Lake Geneva have little control over the contracting bus company transporting the kids.  A woman bus driver, who recently abused her students and even endangered their health and safety, was not fired, only transferred to routes in Delavan where she can continue such activity.
