OUR PLACE
The Lake Geneva Tourism Commission has temporarily paused its grant program through October 31, 2026.
This means that no new grants will be awarded during this review period. The Lake Geneva Tourism Commission paused the grant program to review and update the program’s rules, guidelines, and application forms. The Lake Geneva Tourism Commission normally awards grants funded by the city’s room tax revenue to market events encouraging overnight stays and support municipal development projects that attract tourism.
Prior to the pause, the commission had roughly $26,200 budgeted for 2026 grants alongside approximately $206,000 in reserves. The pause follows a period of debate regarding the commission’s structure, including proposed changes to its membership and concerns over potential conflicts of interest among board members serving on both the commission and local tourism marketing boards. Commission members also needed time to adjust the Promotional Grant Informational Guide and formal application requirements to align with these new strategic spending goals.
The commission has tasked members with establishing clear, formal criteria for how grants are reviewed—specifically refining rules for events hosted just outside city limits that still impact local hotel bookings. The core standard will heavily prioritize applicants who can explicitly prove their marketing plans target transient tourists likely to generate multi-night stays across multiple city lodging properties. This policy is expected to become stricter.
Extra weight is expected to be given to projects and events that drive tourism during non-peak times (Labor Day through Memorial Day) and mid-weekdays (Sunday through Thursday nights) rather than busy summer weekends. Future funding criteria will align more closely with municipal development, favoring infrastructure support over private for-profit festivals. The commission is using the period through October 31, 2026, to finalize these program changes.
