SURPRISING STUFF

The Episcopalian Church, called Holy Communion, on Broad Street.
The Senior Warden came to see the GSR staff in their lair. This man, with such a strange title for a religious leader, was named Gary Shine. What was discussed in that issue was all about how the churches in and around Lake Geneva are bringing in pretty big bucks when it comes to contributions. Gary’s church was mentioned, and it was certainly mentioned without sufficient information or investigation. Gary was straight from the shoulder with the staff. He explained that their church is making it, but barely. The handicap renovations it had to do cost almost the whole budget. The church has only ‘one quarter’ of a priest (priests are expensive so they have to share with other churches in the geographic area), and no official organ player for its fabulous organ, which didn’t have to be rebuilt, as the GSR reported, but only has to have  a new motor for its bellows installed.

This article isn’t written as a retraction because Senior Warden Shine didn’t ask for one, even when it was offered. Gary Shine, former professor (now retired from Northern Illinois University), is quite the substantial and wonderful man.   He had such respect and good manners when he walked into the GSR haunt that he actually asked for an appointment with the publisher. It took five minutes to get the staff to stop laughing at the thought of such a necessity.

Ground-shaking news comes in at the last minute as this issue of the GSR goes to press.
The City of Lake Geneva is losing Sabrina Waswo and Peggy Pollitt on October 5th of this year. Both are going to the Village of Walworth.  Sabrina is the City Clerk and Peggy is the City Treasurer. They will take up those respective positions over in Walworth.  Walworth’s gain and very much Lake Geneva’s loss.  What a hit.  These two wonderful women have been a part of the blessingly cool winds of change that blew into Lake Geneva, displacing the ‘Good Old Boy’ mentality that held the town back for so many years.  That they will be missed goes without words.  Life moves on. And changes are to be expected at all times and levels.  Sometimes those changes come with sadness and pain.  This is one of those times.
