THE BRIGHT SIDE
International Harry Potter Day 2026 is celebrated on Saturday, May 2, 2026, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts.
May 2nd is recognized as International Harry Potter Day because it marks the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, which took place on May 2, 1998. In the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this is the day Harry officially defeated Lord Voldemort, ending the Second Wizarding War. Established in 2012, this day commemorates the series with themed parties, movie marathons, and events. The day was officially declared by then-British Prime Minister David Cameron in 2012 to honor J.K. Rowling’s literary contribution. It serves as a day for fans to celebrate the themes of love, bravery, and friendship from the series, rather than Harry’s birthday (which is July 31st). 2026 also marks the 25th anniversary of the first film, with special celebrations planned. Fans celebrate with events, re-reading books, and marathons.
The Lake Geneva Public Library will be celebrating with its own party. Take a sorting hat quiz, design a sock for Dobby, make a tie (colored to match the house you were sorted into), and attend a potions class. Registration is required for this event.
The 152nd Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, serving as the first leg of the Triple Crown.
The 2026 Kentucky Derby favorite is expected to be Renegade (4-1), with other top contenders including Commandment (7-1) and The Puma (12-1). The Kentucky Derby, inaugurated on May 17, 1875, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, is the longest continuously running sporting event in America. Inspired by England’s Epsom Derby, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. established the 1.25-mile race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds.
Known as “The Run for the Roses,” it is a cornerstone of the Triple Crown. Aristides won the first Kentucky Derby, which featured a purse of roughly $3,000. Secretariat set the fastest time of 1:59, a record that still stands. Mint Juleps (1930s) and extravagant hats (1960s) became iconic, alongside singing “My Old Kentucky Home”. Many local establishments will be hosting special watch parties, so put on your finest outfit and special occasion hat and enjoy the race of a lifetime.
