The Bright Side

The first of the ‘Open Late on Fridays’ is finally here.
The Lake Geneva Business Improvement District (BID) has been encouraging the downtown shops to stay open late, but the board’s requests have not been met with much enthusiasm. That’s about to change, as the idea of staying open late has been turned into an event. The first Friday of every month is now Open Late Friday, and with spring right around the corner, it couldn’t come at a better time. On Friday, March 5th, most restaurants, shops, and businesses will be open until 8 p.m., or later. There will be great deals, different activities, promotions with live music, and special food offerings. Each business is encouraged to be creative and give the patrons who visit a wonderful experience. It’s up to the businesses to make Friday nights great so that this could the start of something truly great for the city and the lake. Advertising this is the key to its success so the BID must step up or the great idea will fail.

March is shaping up to be a pleasant month in Lake Geneva.
The end of the last week of February was exceptionally nice, with warmer than normal sunny days. The abundance of snow accumulated got a jump start on melting. The first two weeks of March are expected to have temperatures in the middle to the high forties, and it should be sunny every day with much more melting of the snowpack going on. With the temperatures well above freezing, the snow is not the only thing melting.  The ice out on the lake is melting, as well. Even with the obvious risk of thawing ice, the temptation is too great for many to resist going out on the lake, even in ATVs, cars, and trucks of all kinds. The lake has been a popular arena for winter fun this year. Trucks, cars, four-wheelers, and people have been out on the lake and the depth of the ice has supported all those activities, so far. Spring is only a few weeks away, however, and the weather is only going to get nicer and warmer. The condition of the ice is deteriorating fast, so safety needs to be taken seriously. March 20th is the first day of spring and is pleasantly welcomed.  Geneva Lake has not suffered a fatality this year so let’s make sure such an event does not happen at all.
