Uber Alles

Shamrock Shuffle night is a Milwaukee ‘bar crawl’ thing around Saint Patrick’s Day
This Uber driver got a call from a woman while he was transporting a man all the way from Mukwonago to a downtown bar that was part of the event. Upon arrival, the bouncer of the establishment told the driver that a couple needed to get from the bar to a hotel, also in Milwaukee.   The transport to the hotel was unremarkable except for one thing. Once the young attractive couple got out, and the Uber driver was well on his way back to the Lake Geneva area, a cell phone started to ring in the back seat. The Uber driver pulled over and sought out the ringing phone. He answered the call, despite standing next to the Interstate in the middle of the night. The driver presumed that the call was from the owner of the phone, but it wasn’t.

The call was from her husband who wanted to know why the Uber driver was answering his wife’s phone. The Uber driver put the man on hold to think. Finally, coming up with no solution to the problem he got back on the line with the husband. Before the driver could say anything the husband asked him whether his wife was with another man, and then went on to accurately describe the man his wife was with. The driver considered telling the truth, but then thought better of it, and invented a tale about taking the wife from bar to anonymous bar alone, during the crawl. The husband bought the story, and gave the driver an address to send the phone to. The driver hung up.

Half an hour later the wife called in hopes of finding her lost phone. She promised a good tip if the driver would deliver the phone to the hotel where he’d dropped her off.  A bit ruffled and disturbed by events the driver did as he was instructed. The woman was waiting alone in the lobby. The driver left with a fifty-dollar tip, but during his drive home he wondered whether what he was doing for extra cash was really worth it.
