EIGHT DAYS A WEEK
In 1965, the song titled ‘Eight Days a Week‘ went to number one on the charts and around the world. It was one of the Beatles’ most successful songs, part of that because of its physical illogic. A week had to have eight days instead of seven to hold and display the emotion being felt and applied. The lyrics are appropriate here, as there are only eight days left until the elections are voted in, tallied, and then announced.
A week may not be enough to contain the explosive emotions that are running and gathering in this, the most heated of all elections in decades. The nation is attitudinally and emotionally divided almost as violently as before and during the Civil War, and after the Civil War right up to modern times remains arguable. Even though the largest populated places in Walworth County, like Elkhorn, Lake Geneva and Delavan, the largest ones, have voted sixty percent republican over the years since 2000, another day may be dawning, what with the contentiousness over how the country is being run.
The economy, the huge doubling of gasoline and diesel prices, along with the Iran war and the President’s ‘strange’ conduct lately, may swing the voters to head in a different direction. Nothing is certain in this election, except for the level and amount of emotion, and that’s off the scale. The amount of enthusiasm and hope of the many voters supporting replacement of the Congressional and Senatorial leadership roles is equaled or exceeded by the naked fear and observed dementia of the country’s current leadership. The ‘eight’ days of this coming week are going to be a critical ride through something like the Walt Disney World Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Guns to the left and right of everyone, up ahead, behind, and whether they are going off or not, the tension of such a visible presence will be difficult to endure for those who can recognize the signs that it is there. There are, now, no rules that the governmental forces currently in play will not violate or disobey, as all the forces of oversight, censure, or outright physical stoppage have been suspended.
The President has stated straight into the mass media’s face and microphones that he and his allies will cheat to get the results they need, disguised as the nation’s needs. The Insurrection Act is openly being considered, wherein the nation would be locked down, and the election results would never be applied until the likely forever “insurrection’ was over. Will this happen? It is certainly hoped not, as the economy, gasoline, diesel, and even relationships with all of the country’s allies could be damaged well into the future. All of us must never forget that there are hundreds of millions of firearms in private hands across America, and no party or group is right now any more likely to use any of them (predictably for right now) to bring what either side would consider some form of peace and justice.
Each day of the ‘eight’ all of those living inside the country’s borders, or even outside, will have to wait with bated breath to see if we get from eight to seven, and then seven to six, and so on. There has not been as much criticism in depth of worry and concern experienced by so many living in America since World War II. How it came to be this way and how it is resolved, one way or another, will be studied for generations, but that is only if the nation survives in the form that most older citizens have become accustomed to.
As the opinion piece published in this newspaper reads: “Danger Will Robinson, Danger”! Although it may seem out of place to be writing and publishing data and opinions about what is happening nationally, if real trouble comes, then it will come right into the front yards and homes of all those living around Geneva Lake too.
