The extent of the Riviera’s roof repairs, and what type of roofing materials will be used, is still undecided.
The Piers, Harbor, & Lakefront meeting last Wednesday night, July 17th, was supposed to have been the night when answers were to be given. The Piers, Harbor and Lakefront Committee met, but the final decision on the new roof has not been made yet. In fact, more questions were raised than were answered. The three options for roof material have been narrowed down to two choices; concrete or clay. The metal option is out. The new question, or option being suggested, is why not just repair the bad spots on the roof instead of replacing the entire roof? Cindy “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” Flower introduced this simple and obvious engineering fact at the meeting. MSI Engineering will be back next month and August 21st is to be the day when a detailed estimate regarding a concrete roof, a clay roof, or repairs to the existing roof will be chosen. The vote on which of the three options is planned for that Piers, Harbor, and Lakefront meeting. A final decision is needed, so the material can be purchased and work can begin this coming fall.

At the City Council meeting Monday, July 22nd, the great little tuk-tuk vehicles were on the agenda for final approval.
The owner of the small business wanted to add two additional vehicles to the fleet. The three-wheeled electric vehicles are used as taxis. Cindy, the owner of Cruzin Transportation, was originally planning on working with the city, the hotels, and the resorts to provide convenient and fun transportation for free to all comers and guests. Cindy and her Cruzin Transportation service applied for a grant at the last tourism commission meeting to help make this happen, but the grant was not supported. Cindy’s presentation was not crystal clear to all the commission members and the question “how will the flying tuks put heads in beds?” was repeatedly asked. Cindy has taken time to test the flying tuks in Lake Geneva and has had a positive reaction from passengers and onlookers alike. Cindy believes the tuks could relieve some of the congestion of driving through downtown summer traffic, as well as the frustration of searching for parking spaces. By offering free rides in the flying-tuks to hotel guests and locals to designated areas in Lake Geneva, particularly on the weekends, there is no question that her concept would work.

However, the commission members were unsure if the tuks were an appropriate use of the grant money, but did agree that they liked the idea of the tuk-tuks and the service they could provide. The commission members voted to give Cindy five-thousand dollars towards marketing and continuing her plans. Cindy’s plan was to continue to provide the tuk service in Lake Geneva, but the idea of the rides being free may not be viable. The convenience and experience of a ride on a flying tuk may well be worth a few bucks to a whole lot of people. Also, the idea of “heads in beds” is more than a little narrow when it comes to trying to help make Lake Geneva an even better experience than it already is. At the city council meeting Monday night, instead of approval, flying tuks were continued to the next Finance, License and Regulation Committee meeting in two weeks. Apparently, there are some insurance and route issues to be considered. Cindy will keep pushing to get her tuks in Lake Geneva, but at this rate, it may not be this summer.
