Surprising Stuff
Showboat Theater is no more.
They are not coming back. The property is for sale to the highest bidder. It’s unlikely, what with the asbestos construction of the old structure, that the building will be kept in its current form. It’s also unlikely that a company like Marcus might come in and re-open it as a theater complex. There’s a fully functional theater already in Lake Geneva (on Broad Street) and the population base in the winter will not likely allow for two complexes to exist so close to one another (as conditions apparently proved). There’s a sign out front of the complex indicating that its for sale.

Dennis and Chris Holian owners of Holian Insulation down in Spring Grove, Illinois. They have purchased the golf course and resort located in Genoa City. This couple has the financial backing to bring the place back to its former glory. The foundations of the resort are solid, and it’s got a great golf course. All of the rooms and banquet facilities are being redone. Their swimming pool is being restored, and the supper club of old is to be reborn. Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet entertained there with many other notables of the day. At one time the place was linked to the Chicago underworld (back in the thirties and forties). Those big-name singers, and most of the Chicago mob, for that matter, are long gone. However, it is hoped that the glory of those days can be brought back without necessarily bringing mobsters back.

For you Sabrina Waswo fans (former Clerk for Lake Geneva).
She is now warmly ensconced over there in the Walworth Municipal building, which is about one hundredth the size of Lake Geneva’s. There’s no city administrator, and there’s two women that run the place. A treasurer and Sabrina, the clerk. The Village Board meets once a month and gives both women directions, and that’s it. Sabrina has gone from a constantly blending political milkshake out onto the plains of placid gentle ambiance, with a few tropical winds until November blows early. Her husband is still doing a fabulous job with the street department, so, in a way, we’ve still got the Waswo’s watching our six.
The reason that Showboat didn’t survive was because its expensive and the place is crap. Marcus could have done well if the building could have been taken down. The only thing that showboat “proved” was that if you take all of the money out of your business for yourself, treat your employees poorly, and never try to improve; the business will eventually fail. My best friend worked there for 2 years and another friend worked there for 10. They had multiple checks bounce. Honestly i’m surprised Showboat held out as long as they did. Don’t get me wrong i have good memories from Showboat from field trips to just out with friends, but i’d drive the extra miles for FRESH popcorn, lower prices, and cleaner facilities.
